On July 1st across the nation, everyone will be celebrating their patriotism towards this great country we call Canada. The Canada Day holiday has given way to the inception of countless different traditions that span everything that embodies the unique Canadian experience such as red-and-white themed parties, BBQ’s, long weekends at the cottage, and of course downtown Ottawa for the fabulous fireworks display. It’s no surprise that on this day, everyone is in a great mood and strangers become friends under the same unifying ideal – that Canada is an amazing place to live and that each one of us is proud to call it our home.
The key to every Canada Day celebration is to incorporate a few unique Canadian staples into the fold. Wearing red and white, while sipping on Canada’s great Caesar cocktail, goes without saying. If you’re in search of a recipe, look no further than the FMMS Bloody Caesar.
Enjoying an ice cold beer has also become synonymous with Canadian culture, but if you want to try something different, we recommend a Canadian Cocktail for the big day or any other day you’re feeling overly patriotic.
Staying true to the Canadian spirit, this cocktail is a light refreshing drink to sip on and cool you down whether you’re at the cottage, barbecuing, or just sitting back by the pool. It carries the same good feeling everyone shares on Canada’s big day with true north ingredients such as maple syrup, Canadian gin, and Canada Dry club soda to play off one another. Once mixed, they mirror the best things about summer and Canada Day. So for this Canada Day, if you aren’t sure what to drink, mix this cocktail and toast to the Nation.
This drink comes from Chateleine, but we tweaked the recipe to make it slightly less sour, since raspberries are generally tart enough as is without the extra lemon juice.
Canada Day Cocktail
6 fresh raspberries with
2 oz Gin (we recommend Victoria Gin, a nice Canadian gin for Canada Day)
¼ oz lemon juice
½ oz maple syrup
Club soda
Extra raspberries
Lemon wheel
Muddle raspberries in a cocktail shaker. Add gin, lemon juice, and maple syrup and shake well. Strain into a highball glass filled with ice. Top with club soda and garnish with fresh raspberries and a lemon wheel.
Cheers to friends, family and good times. Happy Canada Day!
Oooh, I may have me some of that this weekend! I just discovered Raspberry/Cranberry vodka with lemonane. YUM! But it’s good to switch it up so, this one will be next on my list
