Ah, the Fall weather between Halloween and Christmas. Nothing like it! This is my favourite time of year, and definitely my favourite time to get into a warm cocktail after taking a long walk on a crisp afternoon. This season, try a Hot Rye Bijou.
When we last checked in on the Bijou, we learned about it’s very scandalous history. Sure, romantic intrigue is one way to get you hot and bothered, but another way is to literally just heat up your drink, which is basically what we’re doing here. No smut to be found! (Sorry)
Recipe
1 oz rye
1 oz sweet vermouth
¾ oz Green Chartreuse
1 dash orange bitters
Orange peel
Combine all ingredients except for the peel into a saucepan and heat on medium to low, just until you start to notice steam rising off. Remove the pan from the heat and pour into your favourite mug or coupe. Garnish with an orange peel.
This cocktail is not for the faint of heart, though. As a version of a Hot Toddy, it packs a punch, and the act of heating it really brings out its boozy scent. I can promise that your sinuses will clear right up when you reach for your first sip, so keep it in mind if you’ve been lucky enough to pick up that cold going around the office.
Now I just wish that I could go back in time to see if the ambassador’s wife would prefer this one to the original…
